Brown spots are also known as hyperpigmentation, which is a patch of skin that becomes noticeably darker when too much melanin is produced in a concentrated area.
Before we can recommend treatment for this condition, it is important to diagnose the type and cause of hyperpigmentation. Differentiating between types can be tricky because they can look similar and act similar, but they have different causes and treatments. The most common types we see in clinic are sun spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma.
Sun spots ✨
These appear as flat dark areas on the skin, usually tan or dark brown, vary in size and appear on sun exposed areas including face, hands, shoulders and arms. If you have light skin and spend a lot of time in the sun, these spots are more likely to develop. They are also sometimes referred to as age spots, liver spots or solar lentigines.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) ✨
This type occurs after damage to the skin, the hyperpigmentation is triggered by the way the skin regenerates itself after the inflammation. It can affect both the face and body and can range in colour from pink, red, tan, brown or black depending on the skin tone and depth of hyperpigmentation. It can occur with almost any skin type but it's more common and more severe in darker-skinned people. Any inflammatory skin condition can result in PIH, but the most common cause we see in clinic is acne.
Regardless which type you have, hyperpigmentation issues can have a psychological impact on self-image and quality of life. If you are interested in a skin assessment or learning more about how to manage hyperpigmentation, book an appointment for a consultation.
